Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. Sirius is also known colloquially as the “Dog Star”, reflecting its prominence in its constellation, Canis Major (Greater Dog).

Note that: orion belt(three stars in drawing) always directed to sirius.

In Turkish mythology, there is a time when Turkish people suffered, in tricky ways they lost wars against the enemies. Because of they became few, they escaped to a sacred place surrounded by high and impossible mountains which called “ergenekon” somewhere in Altai mountains. In that place there are beautiful waters, springs, nice foods… It’s a place like heaven. In this place they breed and reproduce their population. After generations and generations(they say 400 years), they become many, and they need to get out from this place. But they couldnt find the exit. Because they close the only exit 400 years ago, to make the area secure.

With them, there is one blacksmith; he said there is one mountain made up from iron in mountains, if they bring enough coal and fire, he could melt this mountain and open the way. So they accepted, and bring tons of coal and wood, made a veryh huge fire which noone could made again in history. They burst this fire with huge pumps, which blacksmith was especially made for that purpose… After this, in some places of mountain started to melt down with help of Tengri-the blue sky-god…

There is a “path” appear in between mountains. But they dont know actually what will they do, because they stay in this place since 400 years. They were confused. In this atmosphere; a legendary grey wolf with sky colored mane, appeared sudenly, on their way. Noone could see where it came from. But they understand this wolf will lead the way. As they guessed, the wolf started to walk slowly upon the way. So they followed.

This wolf also known as “Asena”, a grey wolf with blue colored(sky color in Turkish)mane.

After they reach outside, they took their lands again. And once again they become powerful, and they took their revenge from enemy. They never forget what happent them and wanted to remember forever. In Turkish tradition there is a celebration in begining of spring. You can still see this tradition, one man forge some iron symbolicaly in celebrations of beginning of spring(which known as persian name nevruz-new day).

According to Ergun Candan, there are some similarities between the mythologies of other cultures in their symbolism. The she-wolf Asena showed the Turks the way through the labyrinth of valleys and mountain passes. According to Ergun Candan, the she-wolf may be seen as a symbol of the “dog star” Sirius.

Türkçesi; İnternette sayfadan sayfaya atladığım bir gün Ergun Candan(kim olduğu hakkında hiç bir fikrim yok) diye bir şahıstan ergenekon destanında Türklere yol gösteren Asena’nın sirius yıldızı olabileceğini, kurdun aslında sembolik olabileceğini okumuştum. Bu fikir hoşuma gitmişti ve çizimini yapmak istemiştim. Çizeli çok uzun zaman olmuştu ama zamanım olmadığı için renklendirememiştim. işte böyle…
